Artist Statement

Marissa Gomez-Palmer is a Texas born artist & writer who called NYC home for over 15 years but now lives in the wilds of the boreal forest along the shores of Lake Superior.  A multi-ethnic  woman whose art and writing are how she expresses and shares her life experiences. Being Latinx, Cherokee, and Lipan Apache the need to narrate her own story directly to an audience without a third party filter is critical. Her art and writing are her creative outlets. It empowers her to transcend the confines of societal stereotypes. Growing up with multiple religious influences provided a rich tapestried spiritual experience. It profoundly shaped her world view, while expanding her understanding and empathy. Her preferred mediums are pen, paper, acrylics on canvas &  watercolor paper, with occasional deviations into charcoal, chalk pastels, and colored pencils . She also uses found objects to create collages. 

Inspiration

Diversity and inclusion are not just words, they are the basis of her art as it seeks to provide an opportunity for others to step into a world different from what they know. Difference is celebrated, difficulties are met with empathy, lost is mourned, and darkness revealed. She draws a lot of inspiration from the pain of her past.
